A long time ago – half my lifetime – someone once told me, “Success is a matter of being in the right place at the right time. In order to do that, you have to be everywhere at once.” This guy was an acting coach in New York City. If anybody knew about the vagaries of a dog-eat-dog world, it was he.

Doesn’t that just make sense, though? You and I have heard it before. “Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.” Same thing. You’ve got to lay your foundation for success, hold the vision aloft, even when it seems freakin’ impossible for your dreams to become real – even when the people you like or admire are telling you you’ll never attain what you seek. You’ve simply got to keep moving in the direction of your goals. Failure must not be an option.

I’ve had my share of folks putting me down, attempting to discourage me, telling me what I’m seeking in my online world is unattainable, friends patronizing me, ribbing me for working so hard and even calling me a workaholic. Anyone living in the world of black and white finds it damn near impossible to understand the passion compelled by living color.

I’ve always been a hard worker, mostly because I respect the notion that is Work. It’s noble, even divine. It’s what we’re here for – to put our God-given talents to use for the betterment of ourselves and society. I’ve been in the World of Work for a long time, mostly in media and marketing of some type. I began my online career offline – by ghostwriting a book for a track-tested expert on traffic conversion, giving me a boost that few other newbies enjoy. I’ve devoted almost every waking moment to the topic of e-commerce since then.

For just over two years, I’ve been devouring everything I can get my hands on about e-commerce. I get literally thousands upon thousands of e-mails a month from posturing promoters, feeble newbies and suave gurus. I subscribe to their pitches just so I can analyze their campaigns. I download their freebies so I can whoosh through their profit funnels like a ride at a water park. I’m the only person I know who devours her spam folder as a cautionary exercise, just because I find it juicy and diverting. All of this frothing activity has led me down the road of preparation farther than anyone thought possible. What’s that whispering rush up ahead?

I now have over a hundred URLs under my loving care and development, along with a dozen blogs. I am truly an online socialite, joining and exploring as many networks as I can realistically keep current with. In the twilight of my dreams, I hear the chatter on Twitter and it rousts me. I wake up with inspired new ad campaigns, ideas for blog posts and altruistic marketing tactics motivated by the betterment of our crazy, lazy, wonderful society. I am everywhere at once.

All of this knowledge and activity seemed for a time to be a vague form of busy-ness until a month ago. I was heading somewhere – that whispering rush just ahead had grown louder, hinting on the verge of a dull roar. At first I thought it was a cheering crowd. Others told me I was heading over the falls. A month ago I was presented with an precedented opportunity. The chance to join and promote the Blastoff Network , the Internet’s hottest new social network, was planted firmly, squarely, unavoidably in my path. At the same time events conspired in my daily life to place all my e-commerce activities on hold. For a week, the only thing I could work on was promoting the launch of the Blastoff Network. No other option was available.

Fast forward 30 days. My traffic efforts – honedf or 2 years by hurtling myself into the realm of e-commerce – have propelled my online promotions into the fast lane. Blastoff Network had 100,000 members even before pre-launch, giving me a load of stiff competition. Heavy hitters in the corporate world are poised to make Blastoff a household name by next month. And yet my own path was made clear. I knew what I had to do. At last my own gut wrenching, restless, impassioned, frothing preparation has met opportunity. Can you hear that? What’s that deafening roar? …It’s the traffic of the freeway.

I’ve been enjoying some success with creating e-books as software for distribution through software directories, and using these products as a lead in for upsells to other products. Last night I finished an outline of a new book on Internet marketing. Basically as I design any aspect of my business, I turn it into an e-book for sale or free distribution. I believe that any piece of IP you create should be used in multiple ways – articles, books, audio programs, ezines, etc. I’ve used this idea over and over. …But that’s not the snippet I’m putting out there with this post. That’s just off the cuff, some background.

The e-book I just outlined will be sold through multiple venues, including my websites (eCommerceGal.com, AdvertoLite.com, OnlineBusinessPromoters.com, et al.) and affiliate programs like ClickBank. It’s a 21-point system for online business promotion, guiding the reader through initial market research and selection, then through product promotion online, self-promotion using trend-forward tools, and ultimately celebrity. Mostly what’s required is focus coupled with effort; there’s very little cash outlay involved. These criteria can be used for promoting any product or service through the Internet, with the addition of some off-line venues later on.

What this means for marketing my businesses is that I’ve designed a portable system to identify key areas to capitalize on. If you attack an entire market, you’ll never get anywhere without a huge budget. A given market offers so much, promoting the entire offering would be like trying to promote all of a Target store instead of a single aisle or even a specific product. The campaign needs to be broken down into concepts and keywords that are manageable for the average browser with a high school education – find the traffic and put the offer in the path of those people. That way, there is no “conversion” from visitor to buyer. You’re putting your offer in front of people who are already ready to bite, “looking for the lookers,” gently leading them through a process that provides them the benefit they’re looking for. The result is that they become happy customers and we become happy vendors.

Go to http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com. Enter some keywords for a market or niche you’re interested in promoting. Take a look at the number of searches that people are performing for those words. Compare any interesting keywords you find with the results of a Google search. The ratio for the ideal niche should be high search activity, low search results. Finding low competition keyword phrases is one of the most effective ways to ensure site traffic. You can use this tactic for products, services, features, business opportunity, cash generation, anything you yourself are attracted to.

The promotion process is pretty strict an unforgiving – research first, then niche selection, then promotion equals dollars. About 99% of marketers just blindly pick a product and head straight to promotion without ever bothering to find out if they have any customers. Just as frequently, they’ll choose an entire market instead of a market niche and so never distinguish themselves. (Golf is a market. Golf vacations in Pebble Beach is a niche.)

Specialization is required. Discrimination is the key. In fact, they don’t call ‘em keywords for nothing. Specialization means that you can distinguish yourself within a niche. AND. You’ll be a lot more successful.

Once the prospects’ areas of need are identified, it’s a matter of using available promotional venues to get the word out – blogs, Facebook, advertising, etc. Each promtional venue has its place and its appeal to a specific audience. More on that in my next post. The point is, first, find the traffic.

I know a lot of folks with web sites, and they have them for lots of different reasons. Some of these people create websites to promote a neighborhood cause or share the produce of their favorite hobby – writers, artists, musicians with day jobs. Some started their webites thinking it would be a great way to make money part time.

Even more, I know quite a handful of folks, many of them consultants, who rely on the Internet to market themselves and run their businesses. I myself fall into this latter category. The one thing I can say about my approach that is unique from folks in all web development categories is the level of attention I give to the performance of each one of my websites. I don’t know anyone else who knows the performance of their eCommerce as well as I know my own. One of my strongest traits is that I am doggedly persistent. Another strength is that I am consistent by nature.

At 1:30 a.m. today I wrapped up my day’s-end tasks. In the wee hours I check my money, check my traffic stats, check my e-mail. It’s easy. There’s no rush in any of this – it’s all but rhythmic, because it’s so second-nature to me. Across the board, my two dozen sites are performing increasingly well. With an eye on the details, I can catch small problems before they become big ones. I can see clearly what’s working and do more of that. Here’s an example.

HealthForPeople.com is a site I was inspired to create after I was in an auto accident recently. I had a frustrating experience with one of the emergency personnel, and it struck a chord in me. Her philosophy seemed to be that I didn’t know anything about my own health – when the opposite is true – and that I had no right to participate in my own well being. Now, I’ve worked in both healthcare and alternative healing. I feel pretty strongly that it’s time for people to take a greater share of responsibility for their health, to work as partners with their providers, and for providers to honor that paradigm shift.

Apparently I’m not alone in this attitude. HealthForPeople.com is not even “finished” and it’s getting real, organic traffic. It’s cracked through the 1 million barrier, with an Alexa rank of 958,678 after 5 weeks and zero promotion. A third of the articles are irrelevant to their headings, waiting for more of my loving attention. But I sure do like that site. This is a prime example of how my consistent nature is paying off in eCommerce. I consistently identify the cultural gap, pursue my passions, and share the results with a broader world. Consistency. Persistence.

My web host reports that I’ve got about 500 requests for pages a day, with occasional spikes in the thousands. My money blog, SectorMatic Money Journal, is getting more than 5,000 visitors a month. All of my two dozen sites will continue to see further development from my persistent, caring hand. I consistently care about the information I’m presenting – about the value I’m adding to the marketplace.

One thing that the search engines love is change – freshness. I heard that sometime ago. I see that with every effort I make. Push ahead, and get more rank. Tweak this, and get more traffic. Test and tweak, rinse and repeat. Persist. Write. Move. Study. Use the tools consistently. Apply the leverage. Go back and do it again. The smallest effort sometimes yields the biggest results. Do what you know, and then learn more. Don’t ever stop moving, because the inertia of standing still is so hard to overcome. With consistency, with persistence, with applied knowledge, it all just keeps getting easier.

Just a quick comment here… I do most of my computing on my laptop, a Sony Vaio of miniscule proportions – small enough to draw notice in public places. It’s my friend and constant companion. I got this laptop second hand last year, a gift from a friend, and I think it’s now officially considered an antique at 4 years old.

One of my mottos is “Learn By Doing.” I wrote it in Sharpie above my laptop monitor several months back. It’s since worn off to the point that is now says,

_ \ . | BY N _:

Ironic, but not the full story. The laptop’s keys are all worn smooth, half the vowel keys and several consonants are blank – no discernible trace of silkscreen at all – and the space bar is as glossy as a newly waxed Corvette. This pet, my laptop, also houses a multitude of downloads from dozens upon dozens of JV giveaways. At last count, I have a quarter of a million files in my work folder alone, and about 7,000 promo emails in my inbox from all the mailing lists I’ve joined in the past 18 months. I have so many programs, MRR e-books, PLR articles and just plain digital oddities that I could host my own Internet. Unlike most people, I say a hearty “YES!” to advertising. Sell to me, baby – hit me with your best shot. I wanna see your finest moves. Yeah, I am deep in it.

The payoff is that every time I open my laptop’s file manager, my heart pounds with excitement and I can’t wait to get to work. Every day brings a new set of discoveries on a path unwinding of its own volition, and I’m using these tools of mine to help other people lead better lives with each project I undertake, in every way I can think of. I am literally following my bliss. I get to do this work. Everyone should be so lucky!

Good commerce,

Do you participate in a program like Google Adsense or Yahoo Publisher’s Network? As an affiliate, your big hope is that visitors will click on the advertisements displayed on your website and make that virtual cash register ring. If and when this happens, you get paid. As nice as that sounds, internet users must first make it to your website, before they can click on one of your advertisements. Yep, here we go talking about that ol’ Holy Grail again: TRAFFIC.

With an unlimited number of websites to choose from, getting traffic may seem like an overwhelming process. While it certainly can be, there are a number of ways that you can successfully increase your traffic, and in turn, increase the amount of money that you can make as an affiliate.

As an affiliate, your goal is to receive website traffic. While any traffic is better than no traffic at all, you may want to aim for high quality traffic. High quality traffic includes internet users who are looking for something that you have, whether it is information on working from home or caring for a sick pet. High quality traffic also includes internet users who are likely to click on your advertisements. This, in a way, relates to you and your website having what they want.

One of the best ways to get high quality visitors to your website is to have high quality content. With website content, many of us only associate content with search engine rankings. While high quality content is an important part of search engine optimization, SEO, it can and should be used for more. The majority of internet users actually read the information that they find online; therefore, there is a good chance that your website content will actually be read. Having interesting and easy to read content will ensure that your visitors don’t take one look at your site and then leave. It is also important to note that high quality content is likely to attract better advertisements.

The design of your website is also important. In fact, it may be just as important as your content. You want your website to look professional, attractive, and appealing. Unfortunately, there are many webmaster who mistakenly believe that their websites need to be flashy, literally. Although flash intros are neat, you might be surprised to hear that many internet users don’t like them. In fact, a large number of internet users are known to avoid these sites, especially if they do not have a “skip intro,” button. You will want to go with plain, simple, yet professional. If you need assistance with the design of your website, you may want to think about hiring the services of a professional web designer.

In conjunction with the design of your website, it is also important to examine your ad placement. Where your advertisements are displayed will have an impact on how often they are clicked. If you are a Google Adsense member, you should have access to what is known as a “Google Heat Map.” This helpful map gives you suggestions on where you should place your advertisements. Following this outline or a similar one will increase your chances of clicks. If you choose not to use Google’s map, you will at least want to remember to keep all of your advertisements above the fold. Your site visitors should be able to click on your advertisements right a way; they shouldn’t have to scroll down to do so. In fact, if you have poor content on your site or if your site’s layout is unprofessional, your visitors may never even scroll down to see your ads.

As it was mentioned above, all traffic is better than no traffic at all. However, as you can see, it is relatively easy to aim for high quality traffic. That is why you are urged to target those that may help you generate income. High quality traffic is relatively easy to acquire and the positive results will be easy to spot.

Everyday consumers commonly think of online businesses as high technology enterprises. While there are indeed some websites that deal in high tech merchandise, most vendor websites trade mostly mundane materials like clothes, bedding and linen and other ordinary stuff we use in our daily lives. With common enterprises like these, the website is only another selling point for their inventory. What will be mostly displayed in these websites are pictures and short text descriptions of products. On the other hand, vendors that deal with high tech materials design their websites in such a way that it reflects the level of technology they work with.

In the eyes of some consumers, websites that don”t exhibit high technology design could be failing or disreputable. When browsing consumers find your website somewhat lacking in style and technology, looking for another website that will satisfy their expectations is highly probable.

While it could be considered crass or even distasteful to make your website look like the command center of the Starship Enterprise, a few smatterings of high tech applications can give your website design reputation a good boost. In the beginning days of the internet, people tried to make their websites attractive by using lots of blinking and animated pictures in their websites. As website design matured, a more professional and modern feel gradually took over the blinking internet kaleidoscope world.

Today, website design is usually patterned or themed after the owner’s profession or business. Simple but tasteful and professionally elegant are now the norm in designing websites. However, this norm, like technology, is fast becoming obsolete.

As internet availability, data transmission speeds and bandwidths increase, the more options people have for designing a web site. In the beginnings of video streaming, video vendor sites were those that usually contained audio-video streaming capabilities. They used video clips or trailers of a movie to entice a customer to buy the whole video. Today, almost all vendors of video and audio have portions in their websites reserved for viewing movie trailers and listening to audio teasers.

Of course, it would be a mistake to discount or limit the use of video streaming to video and audio websites. Common vendor sites like Amazon.com can surely use video streaming to further enhance the shopping experience of a customer. After all, a customer would like to see the merchandise before she actually makes a purchase. Video streaming provides this specific aid to both vendor and consumer. Aside from viewing videos of the product from different camera angles, a short demonstration of the product can be included in the video just like they do in TV shopping channels.

Outside of video specific and trade merchandising businesses, video and audio streaming is also useful when it comes to other industries such as medical transcription, online education, medical facilities and personnel interconnectivity, online tutorials and instructional modules recorded in video format.

Most importantly, the spread of internet video streaming usage signals an advance in technology. With advances and discoveries, opportunities for new ideas and enterprises abound.

While it is great to have new technology available to, we need to put it to good use for it to be beneficial to us. In the case of websites with video streaming, the customer is assured that the products they sell are workable and crafted with quality. As internet shopping becomes more and more popular, vendor websites will have to see to it that they provide their customers a good look at their product.

How many times have you searched the internet looking for something and ended up coming across a website that promoted only one thing, an e-book for sale? These sales sites have become the norm in eCommerce. What’s nice about many of these e-book sales pages is that they’re successful; a lot of those clicks end up converting into sales. That’s why if you are looking to create and sell an e-book or sell an e-book that you already created, it’s best to make sales site of your own.

If you haven’t come across a single-product sales site, you’ll want to take time to familiarize yourself with the process. In most cases the sole point of an e-book sales site is to promote the given product. In fact, that is one of the many reasons why e-book sale sites are so popular – they work! Focusing only on one product instead of several will increase your chances of successfully making sales.

Laser-like Focus + Targeted Traffic = Conversions

When it comes to creating a sales page for your e-book, what to include is something of a secret sauce. There are consultants who charge in the thousands of dollars for a single sales letter – the main body of your sales page. In most cases, it’s worth it. Having professionally drafted copy can put money in your bank account for years to come. The Wall Street Journal has been using the same direct sales letter, unchanged, for decades. Why? Because it works! It’s the same with the promo copy for your single-product sales site. Once you dial it in, you can put it on auto-pilot and let your cash machine churn.

While you can include just about any features and benefits you want in your copy, there are certain things that should definitely be included on an e-book sales site, to make it work to your advantage. Be compelling – even controversial. People make buying decisions based on their emotions, and they justify those decisions with their intellect. Offer your reader both emotional and rational reasons to buy your product.

Another one of the many things to include on your sales page is excepts of text from your e-book. Showing small portions of your e-book is a great way to increase your chances of making sales. Statistics show that customers prefer to know exactly what they are about to buy.

Customer testimonials and e-book reviews are other important components of an e-book sales site. Customers want to know that your product is worth their money. In addition to providing excerpts from your e-book, customer testimonials are a necessity. Consumers are more likely to purchase products that come highly rated and recommended. To spice up your customer testimonials, you may want to think about including video. If you can, have some of your readers make a quick video praising your e-book. This video can be as short as a few seconds or as long as a few minutes, either way it may help to improve the overall quality of your e-book sales site. The testimonials must always demonstrate how your product made a difference for the user.

Let your titles and sub-headings tell your story to readers who just want to skim. Also let the rich details come out in your paragraphs for those who want to devour every juicy word. Don’t be afraid to use color in your sales site. Accents in primary colors – red, blue and yellow – are the most mentally accessible, and they compel your reader to identify with what you’re saying.

When you use a single-product sales site, the lack of product competition on the page will increase your chances of making a sale. Giving your prospect choices can create confusion, and the confused mind does nothing. When given a binary choice – buy, don’t buy – and presented with cogent reasons to buy, the odds of converting your visitor into a buyer are high. It’s also important to note that e-book sales sites look professional and they tend to rank highly among search engines. What does this mean for you? It means that your sales site has a good chance of being found by internet users who are just surfing for interesting sites about your given topic. It means that you get sales through natural search engine rank. How cool is that?

Good commerce,

If you have a website, you’re probably pretty familiar with Google Adsense and the opportunity it provides for you to make money. Adsense is commonly known as Contextual Advertising, meaning the ads that Google displays on your site are based on the content of your page. Google uses the same technology for their search engine as for their Contextual Advertising. Pretty nifty, huh? You may not realize it, but Adsense is not the only game in town when it comes to Contextual Advertising. Yahoo and MSN come easily to mind. Other companies play the game too, and to get you to participate, some of the lesser known ones pay you a higher premium while offering respectable traffic stats. Google just happens to be the most well known.

Google AdSense has its roots in the old “Google Content-Targeted Advertising” program which they introduced back in 2003. Although this program was similar to the AdSense program we all know and love, there was no automated way of participating. Each webmaster negotiated a deal directly with Google, and websites that served less than 20 million page views per month couldn’t participate. Rats!

As Google grew, they began to see how much money they were leaving on the table by excluding the smaller sites. The little guys greatly outnumbered the sites serving over 20 million hits that were willing to serve other people’s ads. Google’s answer to that problem was AdSense, which has no minimum traffic requirements and is open to all sites meeting Google’s content requirements. So that means we all have the opportunity to make money with Adsense. As for realizing that opportunity…? Well, that’s a topic for another post. If you can’t wait, head on over to www.eCommerceGal.com/Adsense/index.html.

As a website owner, one thing you may not have considered is using Google advertising to get the word out about your site and increasing your revenue that way. Adwords is a great marketing method that can be quite effective for your business, if you can properly target your audience and maximize your conversions into sales.

With Adwords, advertisements for your business are posted on search results and on the websites of others. In a world where millions access the internet every day, this type of marketing can be really effective. It has the potential to generate lots more traffic to your website. A percentage of that traffic will likely result in an increase in sales for your business – the very reason for advertising in the first place, eh?

Adwords can be less expensive than other types of marketing because you only pay when a consumer clicks on your link from one of the websites you are advertising on. This is a great opportunity for new businesses, small businesses, those on a low marketing budget (ha! like who isn’t these days?) and larger businesses that are looking at ways to market their products or services while cutting out unnecessary costs. A word of caution, though: it’s still advertising, and it does cost.

Take a minute to look around at different websites on the internet. I’ll bet you can locate several sites that offer ad links for other businesses. You’ll also notice they look professional and attractive. If you’re ready to give advertising with Adwords a try, the process is pretty simple.

The first step is to go to www.AdWords.com and complete an application. Once you apply, your application will go through an approval process – usually pretty painless. It is important to use relevant keywords for your products or services as this is how matches will be made to relevant websites who will be posting your ads.Google Adwords offers great tutorials to help you select the right keywords for your business.

Google Adwords allows you to create your own ads just like you would for any other type of advertising campaign. The program allows you to format for specified languages and geographic locations. Once the ads are posted on various websites consumers can choose to click on the link and be directed to your website. This is the only time you will pay an advertisement host website. When you set up your ads, you will decide how much you are willing to pay per click on your advertisement. You will also have the opportunity to change and edit your advertisements any time you like. If the advertising is going well you might be able to increase the amount of sites you advertise on.

Adwords offers a great opportunity for you to advertise your business while not spending a great deal of money on it. It can be very effective because the internet is visited by millions of consumers each and every day.

Search engine spiders are by far one of the most useful things to come around in the last 10 years of the internet. They are useful not only to the web sites (Google and many others) that use them, but also to people who are searching for a particular site and those who run websites. Spiders allow your site to be seen by the millions of people who use search engines every day. Let’s discuss what search engine spiders do, how they work, how to set up a robots.txt file and upload that to your site to direct the spiders.

What are spiders and what purpose do they serve?

Spiders are essentially programs that “crawl” sites and report back to their superior (Google or whatever search engine they were created for), whatever their findings may be. Their purpose is to make it easy for sites to get listed in search engines. You might be wondering, what does it mean to “crawl” a site? Well it means to visit and site and copy the information.

How do spiders work?

Spiders work by finding links to web sites, visiting those web sites, going through the content of the site and then reporting the content back to the database of the site which they are working for. Thus Google spiders crawl sites and report the information back to Google’s database. From there, the information is added to Google’s search engine, and the site shows up in Google search results. Much the same process happens with any other search engine spider.

How can I keep spiders from visiting my site?

You might be thinking, “why would I want to keep such a useful thing from visiting my site?” Well, the short answer is, sometimes site owners don’t want the spider to crawl on a particular part of their site. Some site owners don’t want spiders to crawl their site at all. The reasons for not wanting a spider to crawl a site or a particular part of a site vary. Much of the time it is because the site is either completely spam or features a page or two of advertising copy. There are other requisite circumstances as well, such as a photo gallery or download page.

If you own such a site, then you’ll want to create and upload something called a robots.txt file. We will briefly go over how to do this.

A robots.txt file

The whole purpose of a robots.txt file is to tell a search engine spider not to crawl the site or part of the site on which the robots.txt file resides. Creating a robots.txt file that blocks out spiders is easy. First, open up notepad. Next, copy and paste the following:

User-agent: * Disallow: /

Once you’ve done that, save the file as “robots” and as a .txt file.

Uploading the file

Next, you will upload the file to the part of your site which you do not want the spider to visit. For instance, if you don’t want them to visit yoursite.com/news/, you’ll upload robots.txt to the news folder. If you don’t want the search engine spider to visit your site as well, upload robots.txt to your index folder. That’s all there is to it.

Inviting search engine spiders to visit your site

Believe it or not, the robots.txt file can be used to both disallow and to allow search engine spiders to crawl your site. Here’s how to create and upload such a file.

Creating the file

Open up notepad and copy and paste in the following:

User-agent: * Disallow:

You’ll notice that the only difference between this and the earlier example is that Disallow: is not followed with /. If it were, that would tell spiders to go away. Once again, save the file as robots.txt.

Uploading the file

All you’ll do is upload the robots.txt file to the part of your site that you want the robot to pay a visit to. So if you want the robot to see the whole site, just put the robots.txt file right alongside the index file. And you’re done.

Creating and uploading a robots.txt file to help make sure spiders don’t miss your site is fast and easy. So what are you waiting for? Create and upload that file now!

In my last post, we covered brainstorming as an aspect of article development. Another tidbit to keep in mind when writing articles is the list of keywords or phrases that you want search engines to recognize when looking for your article. If you load your writing with keywords from the outset, your piece is much more likely to get attention from the search engines… and therefore (ta da!) traffic.

You probably already know that keywords and keyword phrases are used in internet marketing to achieve rank with the search engines. Now, at a certain point in time, webmasters abused this system by saturating the content of their websites with keywords to be able to achieve a higher ranking. This bonehead tactic not only made for unreadable content, it resulted in search engine users getting results that had no relevance whatsoever to their query. To combat this abuse, search engine webmasters developed algorithms to decipher which websites have relevant content and which websites do not. Now, the whole focus for keyword utilization has shifted to content rich articles with a keyword ratio average of about 12% of the whole article. That figure, 12%, is only approximate. Search engines, Google being the trendsetter, keep their secret sauce, well… secret.

The whole reason for this shift in keyword utilization stems from the fact that search engine sites track and record the abuse of keywords. If you happen to have an article of 500 words containing nothing but the word “porn”, chances are your site will be banned from the search engine. In fact, if you have nothing to say on the topic of “porn” in the specified 500-word medium, let’s just say you should probably get out more often. But that’s another story…

Okay. Back to the topic. …So this shift in keyword utilization has created a whole new industry in writing. You will definitely be able to get a few odd jobs writing search engine optimized (SEO) articles, if that’s your intention. Take a look at Craigslist and Elance.com to find out more about this kind of work.

The key to writing good SEO articles is to be true to the subject at hand. Good lord, why I should even have to state that is beyond me. Doesn’t it just make sense? (Now where is that soapbox? I know I left it around here somewhere.) You want to make sure that your SEO article contains relevant information and a substantial proportion of keywords scattered throughout the article. Include a keyword or phrase in the title of your article. Include a minimum of 2 keywords or phrases in the beginning and ending paragraphs of your article. Finally, scatter keywords in the body of your article. If you have a 500 word article, a minimum of 1 keyword or phrase per paragraph in the text body is recommended.

Write your article for your product, not for the sake of keywords. As you go on with your article, you will be using your keywords when you describe your product and when you give out instructions on how to use the product, service or topic. Write about how the product came into existence and how it has developed through the years. Cite instances where the product has been particularly useful to you or to someone you know.

When you write, don’t force the keyword issue. Trust your topic, and trust the flow. Your articles need to be straightforward, literate, easy to read and entertaining. Some writers sacrifice grammar for the sake of a keyword placement. Don’t be that guy. When searchers are directed to an article of yours and it happens to contain spelling errors, wrong grammar and a generally sloppy composition, you lose credibility. A visitor might decide to look for another article or website that contains better, more well-written content.

If you’re not able to compose your own article because of time constraints, you can use freelance websites to hire article writers who will do the job for you. Prices for an original SEO article containing 500 to 750 words max range anywhere from $1 to about $15. Just be sure to communicate well with the writers so that they fully understand what you’re looking for. Ask for previous work samples so you can judge whether their skills are up to your standards. If you come across a writer offering his service rather cheaply, don’t rush in and call yourself lucky. The best way to be sure that you have found a cheap but quality conscious worker is to ask him to provide you with a sample article. You can use it as criteria for judging his qualifications, and also you might use it later on for other projects.
